What is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)?
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine and metabolic
disorders of reproductive-aged individuals assigned female at birth. Three main features are
identified in individuals with PCOS, including irregular menstruation (i.e., ovulation does not
follow a regular pattern); elevated androgen levels that may increase the appearance of
facial or body hair; and polycystic ovaries (i.e., ovaries become enlarged and contain many
fluid-filled sacs, also known as follicles, that surround the eggs). At least two of the above
conditions are required in order to diagnose PCOS.
